Kyle Thiermann is a writer, podcast host, and sponsored surfer for Patagonia.
He started his career as a short-form documentary filmmaker, traveling to far-flung surf locations around the world, covering ocean environmental issues along the way. This opened the door for him to work with Discovery Digital Network as a writer and on-camera host. He covered a secret 500-year indigenous conflict in Chile, detailed how Hawaii’s wild pigs are killing coral, and generally learned how to meet deadlines and execute a story.
In 2017, Thiermann launched an interview podcast, The Kyle Thiermann Show, currently at 380 episodes and updated weekly. The podcast serves as a conduit between athletes and intellectuals. One week, he may talk to 3x Surfing World Champion Mick Fanning. The next, he’ll chop it up with human longevity doctor Peter Attia.
Thiermann is a cultural provocateur at heart, and in 2018 he co-created the Motherf*cker Awards, satirical awards show that celebrates the corporations that fuck Mother Earth. Comedians represented the corporations responsible for the most impressive damage of the year. Journalists prompted the comedians with basic facts about their “achievements,” and the comedians created their own acceptance speeches. Categories included Land, Water, Air, Fire, Spirit, and The Lifetime Achievement Award. The Motherf*cker Awards was covered by The Young Turks and talked about on The Joe Rogan Experience.
These days, Thiermann works as a copywriter, spearheading national advertising campaigns for better-for-you brands. He has written billboards above LAX, viral commercials seen by over a hundred million people, and ghostwritten high-stakes investor letters for CEOs. Some brands he’s worked with include Yeti, MUD\WTR, Bobbi Brown, Forager Project, Pete & Gerry's, Seatopia, and The League.
Beyond copywriting, Thiermann has written long-form journalism pieces on-location for Surfer Magazine, Men’s Health, Surfline, Outside, and frequently contributes to the Patagonia Journal.
Earlier, he tried out standup comedy before discovering that 9 pm is past his bedtime. At least, that’s the story he tells himself.
